History
Our history traces back to 1835, a time when property loss prevention was not considered a business issue. If your business was hit by fire, flood, or any other natural hazard, you rebuilt and hoped for the best. Zachariah Allen, a Rhode Island textile mill owner, changed the game. To mitigate fire risk and enhance resilience, he invested in property improvements for his mill. Despite these preventative measures, his request for a lower insurance premium was denied by the insurance company. What happened next changed history leading to a journey of almost two centuries that established FM as the preeminent global leader in mutual insurance today.
