Transforming AI with Ramblr: Bringing Gen AI into the Physical World

Jump to

How do you bring the benefits of generative AI, typically experienced on screens, into the physical realm? Ramblr.ai, a San Francisco-based startup, is tackling this challenge with its innovative 3D annotation and recognition technology. “With Ramblr, you can continuously record your actions and ask the computer in natural language, ‘Where did I go wrong?’ or ‘What should I do next?’” explains Frank Angermann, Lead Pipeline & Infrastructure Engineer at Ramblr.ai.

Real-World Applications of Gen AI

A prime example of Ramblr’s capabilities is its collaboration with BASF, a global chemical company. In a video demonstration on Ramblr’s website, a BASF engineer tightens bolts on a pipeline connector. The engineer’s every move is recorded via a helmet-mounted camera. After the workday, this footage, along with recordings from other workers, is uploaded to a database. Using Ramblr’s technology, BASF’s quality assurance engineers query the footage to assess whether any bolts were insufficiently tightened. The software processes the footage to verify correct assembly and identifies any areas needing further inspection or correction.

The Technology Behind Ramblr

“We launched Ramblr.ai as an annotation platform where customers could label images from videos and have machine learning models identify those annotations automatically,” says Frank. Previously, this task was done manually by low-paid workers tagging videos by hand. Ramblr automates this process, allowing customers to customize annotations for their specific needs. The gen-AI powered active learning approach then completes the rest of the video based on those annotations.

Why Choose MongoDB?

MongoDB has been integral to Ramblr’s technology stack from the start. “We use MongoDB Atlas for half of our storage processes. Metadata and annotation data can be stored in one database, eliminating the need for separate databases,” Frank notes. The flexibility of data storage was crucial in choosing a database. “With MongoDB Atlas, we could store information as we wanted,” he adds. The built-in vector database capabilities of Atlas were also appealing: “Storing vector embeddings without additional work—like moving a 3MB array elsewhere—was a big advantage for us.”

Future Prospects

Beyond infrastructure and construction Q&A, robotics is another area where Ramblr aims to deploy its technology. “Smaller robotics companies often lack data to train their models. We can support these companies by providing efficient and cost-effective ways to teach robots,” says Frank. While there are many commercial applications for Ramblr’s technology, the rise of spatial computing—especially with devices like Apple’s Vision Pro and Meta Quest headsets—opens new opportunities. “Spatial computing will play a significant role in understanding processes and what users see in front of them, driving innovation in user interfaces and gen AI,” Frank adds.
